Manuscript notes, taken by students from 1783 to 1810, on lectures covering the subjects of general medical knowledge, the practice of physic, and the diagnosis of clinical cases. Some remain undated and unsigned. Items 12, 13, and 16 contain lecture notes on the practices of chemistry. Item 14 contains a "Table of Fever" drawn on the inside front cover with a drawing of a clinical thermometer. Item 15 (very fragile) includes one set of leaves on the history and government of Pennsylvania. Item 11, third volume, includes a list of domestic medicines inside the front cover. Item 4 includes lecture notes from Dr. Adam Kuhn (1741-1817) on the treatment of diseases incident to children. Item 12 also contains notes from the lectures of Dr. William Shippen (1736?-1808). Among the names appearing in various volumes are Moses Bartram, Robert G. Maxwell, James Overton, Constans Curtin, William Simonton, D. Gilder, Christopher Heydrick, and Dr. John Spangler. Items 17, 18, 19, and 20 mention numerous doctors in Rush's day and their treatments for various diseases and ailments. Item 20, Christopher Heydrick's notes on Rush's lectures, includes lectures on typhus and influenza describing Philadelphia epidemics in 1771-1772 and 1789 (v. 1); and treatments for tuberculosis, smallpox, and measles with an account of the measles epidemic in Philadelphia in 1789 (v.2). Item 21, Rush lecture notes transcribed by William Jackson, Jr., 1804-1805, includes notes on the faculties of the mind--memory, imagination, understanding, will, passions, and moral faculties plus physiology (v. 1)--and differences between men and women. Also includes diseases and their treatments (v. 2).
